Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation, also known as Augmentation mammoplasty, is a procedure to enlarge and increase the projection and fullness of the breasts. This procedure is used to correct the loss of breast volume after pregnancy and to restore shape and contour due to weight fluctuation. This procedure is performed by inserting a breast implant, either saline or silicone, either above or below the muscle through one of a variety of surgical approaches. The most common is an incision underneath the breast or around the areola, placed in areas to ensure scars are as inconspicuous as possible.
Breast Augmentation Size
The size and shape of the breast augmentation implant is individualized to each individual patient. The surgical approach and incision location are also the patient’s choice. Patients undergoing augmentation mammoplasty must also consider that breast augmentation implants (of any type) are not considered lifetime devices and cannot last forever.
The Procedure
Breast augmentation procedures are usually performed under general anesthesia. Size, shape and implant options are discussed during consultation. Risk factors include unfavorable scarring, bleeding or hematoma, infection, poor healing of the incision, changes in nipple or breast sensation (may be temporary or permanent), capsular contracture, which is the formation of firm scar tissue around the implant, implant leakage or rupture, wrinkling of the skin over the implant, fluid accumulation, and/or deep vein thrombosis. Any of these may require revisional surgery.
The outpatient procedure will be performed under general anesthesia with board certified anesthesiologists, and usually takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes. Most people take off several days from work depending on occupation, although it is not necessary. Although postoperative swelling and bruising is normal, women can see immediate results in improvement of breast size and shape.
There are also associated risks with anesthesia such as blood clots, especially in women who smoke or take oral contraceptives or who are on hormonal replacement therapy.
