Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation also known as Augmentation mammoplasty is a procedure to enlarge and increase the projection and fullness of the breasts. It is a procedure that is used to correct the loss of breast volume after pregnancy to balance breast size when there is breast asymmetry and to restore breast shape and contour due to weight fluctuation. This procedure is performed by inserting a breast implant that is either a saline or silicone implant. The implant is inserted either above or below the muscle through one of a variety of surgical approaches, the most common being an incision underneath the breast or around the areola. The incisions are placed to keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible.

Breast Size

The size and shape of the breast implant chosen is individualized for each patient. The surgical approach and where the incisions are placed are also individualized. Patients undergoing augmentation mammoplasty must also consider the following : Breast implants of any type are not considered lifetime devices and cannot last forever.

The Procedure

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and the size, shape and implant options will be gone over at the time of your consultation. Pregnancy, weight loss and menopause may influence the appearance of augmented breasts over the course of a lifetime. Risk factors include unfavorable scarring, bleeding or hematoma, infection, poor healing of the incision, changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent, capsular contracture, which is the formation of firm scar tissue around the implant, implant leakage or rupture, wrinkling of the skin over the implant, fluid accumulation, deep vein thrombosis and the possibility of revisional surgery.

The size, shape, and implant options will be discussed at the time of your initial consultation. The outpatient procedure will be performed under general anesthesia with board certified anesthesiologists, and usually takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes. Most people take off several days from work depending on occupation, although it is not necessary. Although postoperative swelling and bruising is normal, women can see immediate results in improvement of breast size and shape.

There are also associated risks with anesthesia such as blood clots, especially in women who smoke or take oral contraceptives or who are on hormonal replacement therapy.
