New York Breast Reconstruction
Although breast reconstruction after a mastectomy cannot give a woman back her original breast, breast reconstruction surgery in New York is possible at our Breast Reconstruction center. We are experts at rebuilding a breast's shape, giving women back their confidence and self-esteem.
Breast reconstruction procedures forms a breast mound using tissue from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, buttocks, back, or thighs. The breast mounds can also be formed by implants filled with saline (salt water) or cohesive silicone gel. The type of breast reconstructive surgery is decided according to the individual’s body type, cancer treatment needs, previous surgery, overall health and personal preference.
Types of Breast Reconstruction
There are several types of perforator flap surgeries used for breast reconstruction. This technique uses excess tissue from the body, without harvesting any muscle, which is microsurgically transferred to the breast area to recreate the breast mound. These can all be performed either with a skin sparing mastectomy or in a delayed fashion for women who have already undergone a mastectomy.
- Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap (DIEP FLAP)
- Gluteal Artery Perforator Flap (SGAP FLAP)
- Inferior Gluteal Artery Perforator Flap (I-GAP FLAP)
- Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery Flap (SIEA FLAP)
- Breast Augmentation with Patient's Own Tissue (Autologous Augmentation)
Additional Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Additional surgery can be performed immediately, or after a mastectomy, depending on the patient and stage of treatment. There are benefits in performing the breast reconstruction process simultaneously; however, our doctors will only perform the procedure according to what is best for the treatment of the patient's primary disease. Regardless, the breast reconstruction process may include additional surgeries. Each additional surgery completes an important phase of breast reconstruction, such as adding a new nipple, reshaping the new breast, and operating on the opposite breast for symmetry.
You need not feel overwhelmed in making this decision or by having to make the decision. At our New York Breast Reconstruction center we’re not only experts in our field, but we also understand and are sympathetic about what you or a loved one may be going through.
