Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition where there is enlargement of the breast tissue in men. It can occur at any age. There may be an area of localized fat or a combination of glandular tissue and fat. It may be unilateral or bilateral. The procedure to correct gynecomastia is a type of reduction mammoplasty. It is usually performed under general anesthesia and often involves either liposuction, direct excision of the glandular tissue or a combination of both. Efforts are made to keep the scarring as minimal as possible, however depending upon the size, shape and location of the excess tissue the location of the scars will vary. Risks of the procedure include unfavorable scarring, bleeding or hematoma, blood clots, infection, poor wound healing, changes in nipple or breast sensation which may be temporary or permanent, fluid accumulation and abnormal contour. There is also the possibility of secondary revision surgery that may be required.
